Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Germany
Head: Professor Heiko Zimmermann
On January 1, 2015, the Managing Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering was transferred to Professor Heiko Zimmermann. The institute is headed in a dual management until the retirement of Professor Dr Günter Rolf Fuhr. In November 2012, Heiko was appointed by the executive board of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft as the second head of institute to take over the direction of the Fraunhofer IBMT after the retirement of the former Head of Institute, Professor Dr Günter Rolf Fuhr. Heiko studied physics in Würzburg and Berlin, received his doctorate in the field of biophysics, completed a Junior Professorship at the University of Saarland and was appointed in 2008 to a W3 professorship at the University of Saarland. Through its Chair of Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology/Nanotechnology, IBMT is connected with the Faculty of Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biosciences and Materials Sciences of Saarland University.

Staff: Dr Stephanie Bur
Stephanie Bur studied Human and Molecular Biology at the University of the Saarland, Germany. In 2012, she finished her PhD at the University Medical Center of Saarland in Homburg/Saar, focusing on the influence of Staphylococcus aureus “extracellular adherence protein” (Eap) on wound healing and internalization into keratinocytes. Since then, she is working as scientist at the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering IBMT, Department “Cryo and Stem Cell Technology”, in the field of stem cell research. Stephanie evaluates efficient cryopreservation and cultivation procedures for human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), whereas the main focus is the optimization of cell expansion in suspension bioreactor systems using ultra-high viscosity alginate-microcarrier to provide a large biomass of high-quality hiPSCs.
